Dear Members
We hope that you and your families, and loved ones, are taking all the necessary precautions to stay healthy. We have all been affected by this COVID pandemic, to a greater or lesser extent. Our hearts go out to those whose families have suffered with the virus, or worse still, have lost a loved on. The numbers are reported to be on the rise, and we hope that the vaccines that are going out will be able to stem the tide.
We have been able to conduct a couple of planned events virtually. This included some joint presentations of technical interest to the industry.
Also, the Chapter held our annual Concrete Awards night online, including the Charles Pankow Award. Winning projects were The Webster by Shaw and Sons, LA Stadium and Entertainment District (SoFi) by Morley Construction, Ivy Station by Largo Concrete, Linea Project by Largo Concrete, The Green House by Beeson Masonry / Pacific Pervious, Metropolis 2B by Pankow Penta Builders and the winner of the Pankow Award was the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures - Geffen Theater by Morley Construction. We congratulate everyone who was involved in these projects and the other projects that were also nominated for the awards. We would like to thank Heather Todak for organizing the Award event, and also Janeen Oliver, who was host for the presentations. We invite you to go to our website and view these great exhibits of concrete construction. Winners of this year’s So Cal Chapter Awards are submitted to the ACI Excellence in Concrete Awards for 2021.
At the International ACI Excellence in Concrete Awards, held as part of the ACI Fall Convention, the 5900 Wilshire Project by Trademark was voted the overall People’s Choice Award winner. Our congratulations to Trademark.
In addition to the programs that have been undertaken, albeit limited, we are pleased that our Certification sessions have recommenced and continue. Much of the backlog has been cleared and sessions for 2021 are now posted on our website. Again, we thank Josh Cavender, the Certification Committee and the examiners for working through this difficult year and the additional measures that they have all had to take to keep everyone healthy.
Elections for the Board are now underway, and voting is online at our website. Please make sure to vote in this election (https://acisocal.org/Announcements). Voting will close January 1, 2021. We thank the candidates who have stood and greatly appreciate the Nominations Committee for their work in this process.
Our Annual Meeting will be held on the evening of Tuesday January 26th, 2021. The new Board members will be introduced, proposed new By Laws tabled with a vote on them to follow within 30 days, and also the presentation of the Sam Hobbs Award, which is given to an individual who has contributed significantly to both the Chapter and the Industry. Make sure to keep checking your inbox to find out who the Sam Hobbs awardee will be this year! The night will also be a virtual event, and we look forward to a big turnout.
When the year began none of us could have imagined the extraordinary year that was to come, and the challenges to be faced, as a community and as an industry. It goes a long way to show the resilience of all who work in the concrete sector of the overall construction industry. Thank you to everyone for the part that you have played.
On behalf of the Board and Committees of the Southern California Chapter of ACI, we want to wish everyone the very best for a safe, happy and joyful Holiday Season and for a healthy and successful New Year.
Sincerely
Paul Heis,
ACI SoCal 2020 President
