Dear Chapter members and industry practitioners,
The one thing that we can be sure about is that no year will be the same as any other.
Who would have thought when we entered into 2020, with a strong construction industry, backed by a robust economy that we would have seen the things that we are now seeing.
ACI joins with the many voices, asking that you take every precaution to protect your health and wellbeing, and that of your loved ones, colleagues and the greater community. The measures that we are being asked to take are unprecedented, but please don’t take them lightly.
As a result of the current crisis, ACI cancelled the National Convention in Rosemont Il. At a local level our chapter postponed the dinner seminar scheduled for March 19th, and all certification classes have also been postponed. New dates for all of these postponed activities will be posted, when it is prudent to do so.
At the January Chapter meeting former Board member Robert Cleeland was recognized with the Sam Hobbs award, for both service to the chapter and the concrete industry. Congratulations Robert. Two Board members, Josh Cavender and Robert Cleeland, completed their terms, and we thank them for their time and efforts. We would also like to welcome the three new Board members, Margaux Burkholder, a structural engineer with Walter P Moore, Brian Platt, Business Development Manager of G3 Quality Labs, and Ramona Aguilar, Engineering Manager of Coreslab Structures. We also thank Ann Harrer for her term as ACI So Cal President for 2019.
One of our goals for the chapter in 2019 was improved engagement with young professionals starting off in their careers and also college students looking to enter the industry. We are pleased to have been able to begin this engagement with two mixers that we held at Angel City Brewery during the year, the support of college concrete canoe teams, a tour of the new Rams stadium and The Coliseum, with the continuance of our scholarship program.
We would like to recognize and congratulate Rod Elderton, who has been made a Fellow of ACI. Rod was to have been inducted at the March National Convention. Rod has been a very active member of the Southern California chapter for over 40 years. He has served on the Board, been Vice-President and President twice, and is the current Chair of the Certification Committee and Board Parliamentarian. We congratulate Rod on this well-deserved distinguished and esteemed award.
I know that we all look forward to a return to normalcy.
We look to your support in 2020.
ACI SoCal Chapter President 2020
DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ALL FUTURE REGISTRATIONS ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE! WE WILL RE-OPEN SESSIONS AS SOON AS IT IS SAFE TO DO SO. WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS MAY CAUSE!
The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent emergency actions have caused many disruptions, including rescheduling of ACI Certification education and exam sessions to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. These actions may result in an individual’s ACI Certification expiring before a rescheduled session takes place. As a result, ACI has been asked to extend certifications so that individuals may remain in compliance with project requirements as they await recertification testing. For a number of reasons, ACI has determined that extending certifications is not the best solution.
ACI believes the Engineer of Record and/or specifier is the proper individual to review a technician’s credentials and determine if a waiver is warranted/appropriate. This can then be documented in the project files along with an explanation referencing recertification difficulties due to COVID-19 disruptions.
Please direct any questions or requests for explanation to me, and I'll do my best to assist.
