    President's Report

Thank you to everyone that made the ACI SoCal Young Professional Mixer a success!  The Young Professional Mixer was held at Angel City Brewery in downtown Los Angeles on August 27. This event was the first of its kind hosted by ACI SoCal and invitees included anyone who identified as a Young Professional, or Young Professional at heart.  Approximately 80 people attended, the majority of whom were within the first decade of their careers. The lively group also included students, first-time ACI SoCal sponsors, and those looking to learn more about ACI and our chapter. In addition to sampling the brewery’s seasonal finest, a taco truck provided a quick dinner for attendees – two drink tickets and dinner was included with the $15 registration fee.

The event was fun and it was fantastic to see old and new friends catching up after a busy summer. UCLA students and Concrete Canoe Team members made connections for materials and expertise. Engineers were able to talk “shop” with contractors and hear about the latest construction in Los Angeles. Guests unfamiliar with what ACI SoCal has to offer were able to hear about the certification program and the Pankow Awards from board members. Overall, the event was successful in that it allowed another opportunity for professionals associated with the creation of concrete structures to network and collaborate.

While one main aspect of ACI SoCal is the networking of professionals within the concrete industry, another is to share our knowledge and expertise. Our certification program is one of our biggest knowledge sharing activities.  The program introduces new professionals to the construction industry and continues to ensure that there are trained and certified technicians and inspectors contributing to the success of our built environment.

We also share knowledge through our technical presentations at our dinner meetings. Our next speaker, Pete Barlow of Contech Services, Inc., will present on various considerations and approaches to the repair of concrete structures. Pete, a contractor and expert in concrete repair, will share his personal experience with repair through case studies.

As local representatives of ACI, we also share knowledge by referencing, using, and recommending the many reports and guides developed by the various committees of ACI. The most well-known ACI standard is ACI 318, Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary. What you may not know, is that ACI 318-19 was recently published and includes some major changes including changes to seismic requirements and design.

To help spread awareness of the changes among those who use it most, ACI SoCal and ACI are hosting a seminar regarding ACI 318-19 on October 29, 2019, in Long Beach. The seminar will cover new and updated provisions for shotcrete design and construction, revised seismic design and detailing requirements for structural walls, and use of alternative cementitious materials and recycled aggregates. Spots are limited for this seminar, so register today by going to www.concrete.org/education/publicseminars !

Remember, keep checking your e-mail and the acisocal.org website for information on the certification schedule, events, and updates.

    Respectfully,
    Ann Harrer
    ACI SoCal Chapter President 2019
