Dear ACI Members,
I am sure that we all had thought in March that the effects of the Covid pandemic would have been about over by August, and that restrictions on group gatherings would have been loosened by now. Our thoughts go out to those who have themselves, or their loved ones, contracted the disease. We trust that you are all on the road to a full recovery and that everyone is being responsible when it comes slowing the spread of the disease.
The industry was saddened to hear of the sudden passing of our Life Member, Rod Elderton, who had given over forty years of very active service and support to the So Cal Chapter. His tenure as twice President of the Chapter, Certification Chair, and Parliamentarian speak of his passion and deep involvement. His service was recently recognized at the National level with the ACI Certification Award and 2020 ACI Fellow. Our thoughts go out to his loved ones.
One of the measures that the Chapter took was to extend all memberships for twelve months free of charge, so membership fees will not need to be paid this year.
While the Chapter had to put the Certifications Program on hold, we have been able to restart classes in the last month, but with precautions added. We would like to thank the Certifications Chair, Josh Cavender, the Certifications committee, our Examiners, Nathan Forrest and our administration personnel, Diane and Freddy for the many hours that they have spent in developing the Covid protocols, scheduling and rescheduling sessions so that participants could obtain certification. We would also like to say a big thank you to the companies that allow ACI to use their facilities for the purpose of the sessions. Without all your help this vital part of the industry could not be undertaken. Thank you.
ACI National has supported the concept of three Regional Resource Centers across the US and one of those will be located in the greater LA area. It will be in San Bernardino, near the interchange of the I-10 and SR 215. This Center will provide hands-on training and educational offerings to the Pacific Southwest including offering certifications for some of the less common ACI Certifications.
This year under the Chair of Nathan Forrest, the Chapter is updating our By Laws. This is needful to reflect new community requirements and to clarify some operational procedures. The new By Laws need to go through a review process by members and will be ready for the approval process by the end of this year. We thank Nathan and his committee for their work on the new By Laws.
For anyone interested in knowing more about the updates of ACI 318-19, which is the backbone of new structural concrete construction, ACI National offers an online on-demand learning course. ACI 318-19 has many major changes from the previous edition with an additional 100 pages. CEU/PDH credits are available.
We look forward to keeping you all updated regularly and look forward to when we can resume more Chapter activities. We are planning webinars and virtual project tours for the fall and will be emailing out announcements for those events when they are finalized.
